INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS
At the end of this course, you will;
- Understand how to paint rivers, lakes, waterfalls and oceans using Corel Painter
- Understand…the nature and emotional impact of water and learn about some of the best brushes to paint water with.
- Understand why the Rake brush variant is one of the best brushes in Painter to create painterly rivers, lakes and waterfalls.
- How to use light to enhance your paintings
- How to use the new Nature Water brushes
- Understand how to paint in stages and why it is important
- Applying collage techniques

This course is perfect for the beginner to advanced Painter user.
Software Requirements
- ®Corel Painter X.5 or greater
Hardware Requirements
- A computer capable of running Corel Painter
- Wacom pad and stylus
- Live Sessions are brought to you by Go To Meeting, a USB headset with microphone is strongly suggested. Students can also be in listen only mode during live sessions. All sessions are recorded.
Before Class
If you plan to work from photos now is the time to gather some of your favorites. Many of the Watercolor brushes that will be used for this course are found at Painter Talk forum. If you are not yet a member please register. You can do so by clicking on the link, Painter Talk Forum. If you register for this course Membership to Painter Talk Forum will be waived. Please contact me for details. This course also includes a new grouping of brushes, ” Nature Water” for all registered students.
Week One
August 20th to August 26th
This week you will learn how to paint rivers using new techniques and brushes. The brush you will experiment with this week is from the Blender brush category and called the Water Rake brush variant. You will also be introduced to a new Custom brush category called Nature Water. I will show you the many ways to use these new brushes and then let your imagination take you away.
You will begin this week by learning basic building blocks or stages of a painting. The subject will be rivers. Use your own reference photos or use the images I have provided which are located in the Week One Lesson and Resource folder.
Week Two
August 27th to September 2nd
This week you will learn to paint lakes. We will learn to connect to the serenity of a still mountain lake using the Nature Water brushes. Emphasis will be on learning to paint reflective light. Our next project will be using a simple sketch, washes and paper collage to create a beautiful lake painting.
Week Three
September 3rd to September 9th
This week you will learn to paint a waterfall. Emphasis will be on creating the falling motion of the waterfall. Students are encouraged to paint at least two paintings this week. Your first painting will be painted using watercolors and the second, two brushes, Sargent and the Feather Brush Cover brush variants. Students will work with reference images for this exercise.
Week Four
September 10th to September 16th
Our last week will be spent learning to paint the ocean. A special brush called the “Big Wave” brush variant will be used to create the many faces of the ocean from calm to stormy. Students are encouraged to paint at least two paintings this week. When you post your painting, please let me know which one you would like included in the live session group critique..
